Blending Art and Chemical Toilets

Here is something you don’t see everyday, portable toilets being the subject of art.  This video is over three minutes long and seems like it took a long time to produce.  It is an entertaining look at “what could be” for a wide variety of characters.  My favorite is Raggedy Ann in her own special mobile toilet.

Exploding Portable Toilets

It is fun to search YouTube and find out what people are doing with portables toilets.  They like to blow them up, paint them, tip them over, and play practical jokes on other people.  This is one that I thought was funny.

We have some cold weather specials, visit us at PolyPortables for more information.

PolyPortables Recycles

So I was talking shop to a couple of my co-workers and friends the other day and we got to thinking about all the plastic that PolyPortables uses to make our chemical toilets.  The friend piped up and said her room-mate, who used to work for PolyPortables, brought home plastic shavings one day.  Being the artist that she is, she fashioned a picture frame out of the recycled plastic.  It was her own personal PolyPortable‘s portable toilet plastic picture frame (say that five times fast).  She said she wished she had more of it because she could really use it to make some fancy crafts.

This got us to thinking about all things we could do with the portable toilet plastic shavings.  There are no sharp edges and the little pebbles are quite smooth.

  • playground ground covering
  • mulch for your landscaping
  • arts and crafts
  • stuffing for pillows
  • melt it down and reshape into art
  • insulation
  • aquarium “gravel”
  • filter for house plants

These are just a few ideas we can up with on the fly.  If you think of any more, please send us a comment.

PolyPortables takes all their plastic shavings from the manufacturing floor and sends them back to the plastic plant to be melted down and used again, minus the few handfuls that get picked up by employees and used for crafts!

Kathy Crafton, President of PolyPortables, makes a conscience corporate decision to recycle as much as we can.  Our recycling bins are bigger than our trash bins.

Here are a couple pictures of the boxes we send back to the plastic plant.  portable toilets, toilets portable, chemical toilet, toilet chemicalportable toilets, toilets portable, chemical toilet, toilet chemical

Are Mobile Toilets Becoming More Mobile?

I ran across an article the other day about how mobile toilets are becoming, well, more mobile.  Companies are now loading up portable restrooms on trailers and hauling them from event to event.

Portable toilets have really evolved over the years.  We are no longer producing the big blue boxes anymore.  Many of the mobile toilet trailers are tailoring to high end events.  Often , the portable toilets are full-sized, flush-able, and fully customized with granite tops and tiled floors.

Here is an expert of the article that got me thinking about the future of mobile toilets.

Restroom trailers are hauled to events by trucks and then set up for use. They are not a trailer loaded with port-o-potties, but rather, a self contained unit that can accommodate one or several bathroom stalls. The truck and attached restroom trailer pull up to the designated site and the trailer is unhitched and left for the event. Because it is mobile, it is perfect for large gatherings that only last a short time. An event that takes place out in the country, in wide open spaces, is the perfect setting.

A Chemical Toilet Protest?

Thanks to Perezhilton.com, we know that protesting chemical toilets is a thing that can happen, in Rio de Janeiro, over a movie.

Below is the post found on that site.

Don’t upset the people of Rio de Janeiro, or they will protest against you…in silly ways!
Rio de Janeiro locals reached the proverbial “last straw” with Breaking Dawn filming interrupting their daily lives, so they SET FIRE to one of the film crew’s porta-potties (chemical toilets).
Fortunately, it doesn’t look like anyone was in the porta-potty (mobile toilet) at the time.
We’re thinking this was probably not the most effective way to protest the movie, but who knows?
Maybe one day after the cast/crew’s lunch, if there’s a long line at the untorched porta-potties (chemical toilet), the impact of Rio de Janeiro’s wrath will be felt!
Do U think torching toilets is an effective form of protest?

We know the main two reasons for chemical toilets but this is definitely a new one in our book.

National Christmas Tree Traveling Through Dahlonega

This doesn’t relate to PolyPortables or chemical toilets but it is big news for our small town in the north Georgia mountains, where PolyPortables manufactures their mobile toilets.  The Achasta Newsletter sums it up best.  Below is an excerpt.

The Capitol Christmas Tree, the cherished tree that sits on the west front lawn of the Whitehouse, will be coming through Dahlonega before it makes its way to Washington.

Jeff Underwood Trucking of Dahlonega was awarded the contract to transport this year’s tree.  It was harvested from the Bridger-Teton National Forest in Wyoming and is on its way to the North Georgia Mountains.  The tree will be transported on a special 115 foot flatbed where it will rest in a custom made cradle that will preserve the tree’s shape.

From November 24th to the 26th, residents and visitors alike will have chance to see this astounding 75 foot before it makes its final drive to the White House.  To commemorate this special event the city of Dahlonega will host a Grand Holiday Celebration on Wednesday, November 24th in its historic town square.  There will be musical entertainment, holiday performances, and appearances by state dignitaries.  Those in attendance will have the unique opportunity to send their holiday wishes to the White House by signing a banner that will decorate the truck on its journey.

Not Your Standard Blue Chemical Toilet

Recently, while browsing the internet, it was discovered that many people are fascinated with portable toilets and what can be done with them.  People are writing blogs about mobile toilets, collecting photos of interesting chemical toilets, and there are even websites dedicated to them.

Chemical toilets are now becoming works of art.  One company in Italy has a picture of Michelangelo’s David adorning the front of a mobile toilet.  Another company in Idaho allows people to “adopt” a toilet and paint colorful murals on it.  Still another made some large paper mache faces and attached them to the doors of the chemical toilets for a festival in Nevada.

Who knew that an engine could be attached to a mobile toilet and make it run around a race track.   Others have turned the big blue boxes into rockets and shot them into the sky.  Kind of gives a whole new meaning to the word portable!

mobile toilets, mobile toilet, chemical toilet, chemical toiletsAs a take on pop culture, chemical toilets are now being used as billboards.  Amy Winehouse recently promoted her new album on the side of several mobile toilets.  Not sure how most artists would react to having their faces plastered across a portable toilet, but it seems to fit with Amy.

Doing a Google search of portable toilets and mobile toilets can result in some very interesting items.  These are just a few of the  good ones that came up, and as a warning, it is best not to do this search during your lunch break.  Some aren’t so pretty.

Tailgaters Could Use More Mobile Toilets

According to one Mizzou tailgater, there are not enough chemical toilets for patrons to use during the football games.  Joseph Gravish wrote a letter to the editor of the Columbia Daily Tribune that the event planners have failed the fans when it comes to mobile toilets.

This is his letter:

Editor, the Tribune: Once again, University of Missouri event planners have failed. And once more, loyal Tigers fans have been shortchanged despite paying for, and reasonably expecting, a modicum of “service.”

Let me explain: Hundreds of tailgaters who pay for reserved season parking in Lot X have to suffer with a woeful health problem: a lack of adequate Porta-potties (chemical toilets). What do we get for our yearly $165? Atrociously long lines and, close to the end of the day, unsanitary, not-all functioning restroom facilities.

By my count, MU provides no more than 20 Porta-potties (mobile toilets) in Lot X. According to the university, there are 1,000 reserved parking spots there (excluding same-day parking patrons). Using a conservative figure of 4,000 patrons tailgating for up to 10 hours (with an 8 a.m. lot opening and a 6 p.m. game time), most providers suggest 40 to 50 Porta-potties (chemical toilets) are needed — twice the number MU actually supplies.

With revenue of approximately $165,000 per season, one should expect more. Perhaps MU contractors have never tailgated “among the masses” but instead party in the suites and aren’t concerned with waiting, often with children, for 15 or more minutes to use the restroom. We do donate faithfully and make up the majority of tailgaters and game attendees. Perhaps the city should enact a health ordinance specifying the minimum number of Porta-potties (chemical toilets) for an event. Wake up, Mizzou. We deserve better.

Saga of Chemical Toilets Continues for Jon Stewart

A couple weeks ago, we reported on the controversy surrounding Jon Stewart’s “Rally to Restore Sanity” event going on in Washington, D.C. during the same time as the Marine Corps Marathon.  There is a problem with the sharing of chemical toilets for both events.  To help bring a resolution to the mobile toilet debate was none other than Larry King.  Jon Stewart appeared on Larry’s show last week and received a gift…a chemical toilet.

Below is from AOL News (Oct. 21) — by Mara Gay.

Larry King has gifted a portable toilet to Comedy Central host Jon Stewart for his upcoming Rally to Restore Sanity on the National Mall in Washington.

Stewart received the unusual gift on CNN’s “Larry King Live” Wednesday night, after King noted that there had been some question about whether the organizers of the Oct. 30 Comedy Central event — meant to poke fun at conservative pundit Glenn Beck’s recent Rally to Restore Honor — would be able to obtain enough portable toilets for its anticipated thousands of participants.

Earlier this month, The New York Times reported that the annual Marine Corps Marathon had snatched up most of the available portable toilets in the D.C. area for its event the same weekend, and was refusing to share them with Comedy Central.

“We have been in contact with the Porta-Potty people,” Stewart said Wednesday. “Right now they say they’re efforting Porta-Potties.”

He denied that there was any kind of Porta-Potty crisis.

“We will have toilets. They may not be enclosed. I guess what I’m saying is, we will either have toilets or we will have shovels,” he joked.

King, though, said he wanted to do his part.

“Well we have something for you,” King said. “I wanted to do my bit, for the rally attendees. This will be shipped to you. Open the curtain, please!”

Underneath the curtain, of course, was a Porta-Potty. “There it is! The first potty for the rally!” King said.

The oddball surprise seemed to leave Stewart speechless. But it wasn’t long before the comedian found his voice again.

“Is that the hyperbaric chamber that when you’re not working?” he joked. “Alright, somebody store King until tomorrow!”

The organizers of the Marine Corps Marathon explained on Oct. 7 why they refused to share the portable toilets. “We’ve paid for ‘em. They’re already there for our race, our event. We’ve taken care of our event, and our event is very separate from what Comedy Central is doing,” Tami Faram, a spokeswoman for the marathon, told AOL News in a phone interview.

Chemical Toilets Help in Emergencies

The University of Wisconsin-River Falls is taking preventable measures against natural disasters and adverse weather.  The university has been awarded a grant to build two emergancy shelters, which will include chemical toilets.  Below is an article that details the plan.

By Kevin Mauer of the Badger Herald

Updated Monday, October 11, 2010 10:07:40 p.m.

The University of Wisconsin-River Falls will be spending more than $90,000 to create two emergency shelters on campus, thanks in part to a grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

The grant will equip two buildings on campus with emergency aid capabilities to help people in the event of a disaster.

The two laboratory farms were identified by FEMA’s Pre-Disaster Mitigation program as posing the greatest risk for loss of life and property in case of an emergency, due to their isolated locations and lack of protection against high winds and tornadoes, according to Blake Fry, special assistant to the chancellor at UW-River Falls.

There were 16 tornadoes reported in the state of Wisconsin in 2009, according to the National Weather Service. There were no reported injuries or deaths from the tornadoes.

Fry said they are small buildings on the edge of campus.

The purpose of the new shelters is to provide a refuge for students, faculty or anyone else who may be nearby, Fry said.

“There are no restrictions on [who can use the facilities],” Fry said. “Anyone who is in the area at the time of a disaster can use them. In fact, there’s a horse arena around there, so should a disaster occur we may be sharing them with those folks.”

The construction is anticipated to begin next summer.

“We’re in the process of bidding the project out to contractors, so we are unsure when it can actually get underway,” Fry said.

The federal grant is worth $70,190.55 according to Fry, but that is not enough to cover the entire cost of the project. The university will seek to attain the remaining 25 percent of the total cost, or $23,402.90, through the Wisconsin’s Small Project Program.

The buildings will be upgraded with a variety of new safety measures to match FEMA standards, including emergency lighting and chemical toilets, in case individuals are stuck in the buildings for a long period of time, according to Fry.

PDM grants may be awarded to states, territories, Indian tribal governments, communities and universities, according to a statement from FEMA.
